Dear Quibik, thank you a lot for fixing the code in both of the images. You made the code valid and at the same time, significantly reduced file size. I am by no means familiar with editing svg files using text editor (notebook), but I'd like to learn the way you did it. Could you possible explain how you did that, or suggest something for me to read instead? E.g. what to look for, what is redundant and what can be safely removed from the source code. Oh absolutely, take your time, it will be great to learn. I started drawing about a year and a half ago, but it wasn't until recently that I have actually looked inside a code, due to some Cyrillic alphabet rendering problems. Source code

How do you cleanup source code? What should I look for? I believe you edit the SVG manually? --Shandris (talk) 12:44, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

In the images uploaded recently by Jovianeye, for example, I first opened the image in Illustrator, removed any unnecessary nodes from the paths and modified the curves that should have really been straight lines to be such (manually and with the aid of the "Simplify path" tool's "straight lines" option in Illustrator). I also modifyed any circles made up of more complex shapes to really be just circles. In the flags that had a rectangular background, but had holes in the rectangles where other objects were on top, I removed the holes as they are not necessary. It is also sometimes a good idea to combine paths togeteher (ctrl+8 in Illustrator) or unite them. I also usually optimize the object structure a bit, where necessary. Next comes the manual editing: the Illustrator generally outputs very good code already (compared to Inkscape, for example), but can always be cleaned up a little more. For example, most files don't need the majority of the information that is included in the <svg> tag.

I hope this rambling gave you some ideas for cleanup, but the procedure is always quite specific, so it's hard to give you any more general tips, besides this: as a rule of thumb, you can throw away any information that does not affect the result, but still leaves the source code valid. It's also a good idea to re-save the files having a lot of Inkscape junk embedded in them in Inkscape as "Plain SVG" before any further editing. Ty for the reply. I too opened his files in illustrator and removed unnecessary groups and made circles with holes into true circles. Thanks again. That file indeed had a lot of room for improvement: the outer border of the black part was made up of 38 nodes which were connected by curvy lines (it's a triangle!!). The rest was just minor tweaking. —Quibik (talk) 17:17, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Okay this is weird. I removed some redundant extra nodes from the big letters but the file increased 1 KB. I also remove the whole <svg > tag but Wikipedia gave me error so I had to put it back. Try compress it yourself and tell me how you're doing it =P I'm good at creating SVGs but have no idea how ppl for example compressed the complex flag of India to just 800 bytes. --Shandris (talk) 18:28, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

I think I'll give the File:GMC logo.svg a try once the editing has calmed down. I doubt there's much to optimize, though. The flag of India uses a clever trick to reduce the size: in the wheel part of the image, the "rod" and a "dot" are defined once and then duplicated 5 times to have 24 of them. —Quibik (talk) 19:30, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Aside from some minor coordinate twiddling I removed some unnecessary elements from the header:

Any duplicate objects you create in Illustrator will be fully duplicated (in other words, not linked to a single definition) in the resulting SVG, so the size will increase. In Inkscape for example exists a "clone" tool which duplicates objects by linking to a single definition. I didn't manage to find a good tutorial on it, but perhaps this gives you an idea of how linking works (its basically done with id="..." and <use ...> tags).

Estonian images

No problem, I have absolutely no objections to your actions. In fact, I'm glad that someone finally did something with the mess that PD-EE-exempt is. The majority of the images you migrated were actually not orphans – I replaced their usage with a superior version that already existed on Commons. Another issue, that you might want to look into are the Category:Military rank insignia of Estonia, that is for the most part duplicated at en:Category:PD-EE-exempt. The enwiki ones are in the PNG format with ridiculous and unnecessary transparency added, but at the same time have descriptive names that the Commons ones lack. I'd be happy if you did something with that – it should be easier to accomplish with admin powers –, but of course you're not obliged to. Thanks, Quibik (talk) 14:06, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Sorry for all the unnecessary headaches; I fixed the new problem. I have to say, though, that I don't really understand what caused the problem and why my solution fixes it, either. The fix involved changing the line:

to

<path id="lakes" style="opacity:0.4; fill:#ffffff" ...

Notman

Thanks for your kind note. I was actually trying not to trouble you, although I perhaps ought to have left you a note with a heads up. While I think it's great that PD-old-100 is added to these images, there are many benefits to keeping PD-Canada (even though it is, admittedly, a bit of belt and suspenders). A user in Canada (given the content of the Notman collection, there is a good likelihood that most users would be Canadian) would have no way of knowing from PD-old-100 if the image in question is in the public domain in the source country or not (unless they were familiar with copyright law in Canada and understand that the tag covers Canada). Moreover, PD-Canada (and, by extension, any PD tags relating specifically to source countries) are tremendously helpful to novice editors who are familiarizing themselves with the copyright rules. I was not too certain about the shield's border either. The source image's border was quite uneven, so I thought I should leave it that way. But now that you also suggested changing it, I made the shield's shape perfectly symmetric (horizontally and vertically) and added an even border around it. There is really not much to choose from besides Inkscape when you want it to be open-source/free. My preferred application is en:Adobe Illustrator, but that is proprietary. Inkscape is still good, though, and I recommend you give it a try. —Quibik (talk) 22:13, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Ah okay there are declension problems, that's not so easy to solve. If there is no simple rule, I guess the best we can do for now is to write something like: {{portrait of male|{{langSwitch|en=Hugo Treffner|et=Hogo Treffneri}}}}. This allows to keep more languages. Thanks for offering your help. :) As you said, there will be issues with declension and the no simple rules exist, indeed. The only grammatically correct sentence structure that I can think of (that would not require modifying the subject noun) would be something like "Portree isikust X" ("Portrait of a person X"). Unfortunately, that sounds rather awkward and is not really the intended title of the work. Changing the word order would certainly be welcome, though. Please do so, if you can. About using the {{langSwitch}}: I don't think there's any escape from using it anyway – at least Estonian is written in the Latin script, for example. —Quibik (talk) 11:31, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

I have changed the template (not perfectly clean but I think we can do better in some time). We now have

Thanks for the suggestion. The choice of color in that version seems rather arbitrary as well, so I don't think I am going to use it though. Continuing on the subject: would you please not remove the source links from the flags/COAs? Homogenizing descriptions is good, but keeping the relevant information is much more important. The images tend to vary somewhat from source to source, so its beneficial to know where they are from. Yeah, I saw that. I think the true color is probably something between these two – the dark gray fabric in the image has a slight purple/blue hue. I guess I'll try to adjust that. The top silvery part should probably still be rendered white as it usually is done, I think.

By the way, could you take a look at the Category:Flags of municipalities of Latvia? Most of these seem to be cities/towns rather than municipalities, but I'm not sure they can't be both either. translating template:technique into Estonian

Quibik, we are currently template talk:technique a new version of template:technique. I have header that Estonian is a rather complex language. To make sure our template works for many languages, it would help to know how it should work in Estonian. So could you tell how "green oil on blue canvas mounted on black panel" should be translated, and tell us about declension and phrase structure in this case.--Zolo (talk) 12:22, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

This sentence can be translated without changing the word order. I've noted the grammatical cases of the words in brackets.

"roheline õli [both nominative] sinisel lõuendil [both adessive] kinnitatud mustale paneelile [both allative]"

That sentence might also require a comma in some place, I'm not sure. I asked a friend who has a better grasp of Estonian language's grammatical details, and I'll give an update as soon as I get a response. • I suppose "kinnitatud" translate mounted. Is it invariable or can its form change, say when it referes to a plural non
• Are ther grammatical genders in Estonian (eg dl adjectives change depending of wheter they refer to a masculin or a feminine word)? (I think they don't but I am not sure.)

Otherwise, it seems to work. To ease testing, maybe you can comlete the missing cases in template:technique/sandbox/et and template:technique/sandbox/et/adjectives. Yes, "kinnitatud" is a translation of "mounted". It should be invariable. By the way, when translating that, I checked the word use of that verb on the website of the biggest art museum in Estonia. They usually translated "mounted" as "kleebitud" and only once as "kinnitatud". "Kleebitud" better translates as "glued" or "sticked" and "kinnitatud" as "fixed (onto something)". "Glued" seemed much too specific so I chose not to use that.

Everything looks correct, though I am not sure whether I should pay attention to the live version or the sandbox one – the sandbox version shows "group order" error for most entries. The only (and not that important) thing I would change is the way some words are translated. For example, chalk is translated as kriidijoonistus, lit. chalk drawing; tempera is translated as temperamaal, lit. tempera painting; so on. This is the non-sandbox version. Actually the testcases page, is no longer really suitable. The sandbox is because I realised afterwards that it could be made simpler without changing the output. I have added et support for the sandbox too now, it should be the same. About translations, you can change it (the template was done by an IP) By the way the English template supports much more words. Those missing in Estonian appear in red (with an excess space before the comma but that should be fixable) e.g. sinine õlimaal, reddish glass paste, cream-colored molded glass, color dry plate collodion, polychrome antique laid paper ja hand-colored rose granite albumiinpaberil mustal gofun ja gray-green Greek insular marble kinnitatud glazed pöögipuidule). Most words from the Eglish templates are not much used so this is not very importantn but you may want to add some like "photograph", "marble" and "bronze".--Zolo (talk) 16:45, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Actually, now that I started translating the words, I rembered something that I probably should have mentioned earlier. In Estonian language, with the exception of nominative, genitive and partitive cases, all inflectional endings (both plural and singular) are derived from the singular genitive case. So, we really only need to provide singular nominative and genitive cases for each word in the translations. Could you update the template accordingly? Yep. To get the essive and lative cases used in the template you would add -l and -le respectively (guašil, guašile). Feel free to ignore my remark though, if adding this modification this would be any hassle.
